On January 28, 2012, the Yolo County SPCA Thrift Store hosted their first annual fashion show featuring garments and accessories sold in the store. The models walked down the runway looking chic and fresh as if they were show casing outfits sold in a high end boutique. The message was clear- you don’t need to spend a lot of money to look stylish.

Located on 3rd street in downtown Davis, the YCSPCA offers an eclectic collection of clothing, shoes, jewelry, household items, books, and more. Finding a unique treasure when shopping here is a guarantee and all the proceeds go to Yolo County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Shopping at thrift stores is always a unique and worthwhile experience. When it comes to shopping for clothing and accessories, you are bound to find something creative and special that will make your outfit stand out. After the search is done and you are ready to make your purchase, you will smile and feel good inside because not only will you shine in your groovy $2 Christian Dior blouse designed with colorful flowers and a deck of cards, but you will be giving back to organizations that thrive to making your community a better place for everyone.

If you are a bit unsure about incorporating vintage items into your wardrobe, here is a bit of advice - you don’t need to wear the latest fashions to be fashionable and you don’t need to spend a lot of money to look like a Fashionista!

My favorite thing in life is fashion, and my second favorite thing are satirical cartoons. It was only a matter of time before they would join together and create some amazing works together. There have been representations of them as Muppets and even animals but these cartoons interpretations are one of the best. The Simpson's cartoonist, Alexsandro Palombo, illustrated fashion legends like Karl Lagerfeld, Anna Wintour and Grace Coddington into (pretty spot-on) Simpson characters.

And this isn't the first time these fashion legends have been illustrated. Harper's Bazaar published an editorial in 2007 showcasing even more fashion icons, with even more embellishments. Can you recognize them all?

If there's one thing I love more than the beautiful spring weather, it's the colorful spring wear. Just recently I stumbled across all different colors of denim wear. They definitely do seem intimidating at first, but once you find a shade that you're comfortable with, it's easier to find pieces that work with it. If you're looking for an inexpensive yet bold change in your wardrobe, a pair of colorful jeans will do the trick. There's a wide range of prices as low as $24.80 (Forever 21) all the way to $198.00 (Saks Fifth Avenue). You can have fun with them in a casual outfit during the day, or dress it up for going out at night.

My favorite beauty and video blogger for years now has been none other than the fabulous Dulce Tejeda, better known as Dulce Candy to her beauty and style followers! As a simple girl that started her youtube beauty videos back in 2008 with no intentions of being one of the leading beauty gurus online, she is now one of the go to fashionistas of the virtual era! Her videos are often for those who can't get enough of her creative makeup and styling skills but also her upbeat and bubbly personality! Dulce candy definitely makes the grade for the title of bloggernista!

While we have a few days off from the rain in Davis, it is the perfect opportunity to go out and buy some rain boots! At first I was a little unsure of how I felt about the rain boots look, but it turns out that there are lots of options. They are not only practical and keep you dry, but there are also a lot of new styles coming out that make a fashion statement as well. If you don't think you'll get enough use out of them and want to stay on a low budget, Delia's offers a variety of patterns for the low price of $34.95! If you're looking to spend more for a high quality brand, however, Hunter boots are the right boots for you. This style has been spreading like crazy, and I even see people wearing Hunter boots when it's not raining! Another classic that will never go out of style is Coach rain boots, and they are a fairly reasonable price- a little bit cheaper than Hunter boots.

The Oscars are back again and the nominations for costume design were released last week! And the nominees are...

The Artist: costumes by Mark Bridges

Every costume designer knows that costumes have the ability to communicate so much about a character without saying a word. Which, in this case, is perfect. This silent movie is about the transition from silent film to sound, and is also shot in black and white, two unique challenges to any present day costume designer! This is the first Oscar nomination Bridges has received.

Hugo: designed by Sandy Powell

Living in a Paris railroad station, Hugo is a young boy who spends his time maintaining the station's clockwork and trying to fix a broken automaton his father left him before he passed. Powell managed to better illustrate and intensify Hugo's world with her costume choices, some including bold uses of color as seen in this photo. This is the tenth nomination for the legendary Sandy Powell, who has taken home three oscars (1998, 2004, and 2009).

Jane Eyre: designed by Michael O'Connor

Based on the classic novel, Jane Eyre is one of the most famous rags to riches stories. Another film that requires period costumes, which is probably why they hired Michael O'Connor. O'Connor was the Oscar winner in 2008 for his work on The Duchess, a movie taking place in the 18th century. Jane Eyre is full of visually captivating garments.

In this film, a young New Yorker attempts to discover the truth behind the marriage and the scandal of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Due to the transitions from past to present day, the movie is rich with a variety of costume. This is the second nomination Phillips has received, his first being for Walk the Line in 2005.

Anonymous: costumes by Lisy Christl

This movie is a fictional political thriller about the conspiracy of who really wrote Shakespeare's plays. Because it takes place in the age of Shakespeare, the film is full of beautiful historical garments and has well earned its place among the fabulous nominees. This is Christl's first nomination.

Just six months after Target's mega-hit collection with Missoni, the corporation is ready to release yet another designer collaboration line- this time with Jason Wu. Manhattan-based Jason Wu's first collection debuted at New York Fashion Week in 2006. He has since dressed Ivana Trump, January Jones, and Michelle Obama, who has worn his designs on many different occasions. The young designer's collection will include playful Spring dresses, cat prints, scarves, and handbags. Jason Wu for Target hits stores on February 5.

DIP DYE

Just like every girl, I obsess over my hair. You always want to try a new, drastic hair cut, but always chicken out at the last moment and just go for a trim. While I am still too afraid to cut my long locks, I have been contemplating trying a dip dye job. This new ombre look has been trending all over young hollywood and catching the eye of on-looking hipsters. While the verdict is still out as to whether I will go through with this dramatic new look, I still think it is one of the coolest new hair trends for the youth of today.

I was born on October 5, 1992 in Landstuhl, Germany to a wonderful, loving, Filipino-American, and rather large family. Someone once told me that to achieve happiness in your life, you should pursue something you are truly passionate about. To me, this passion has and always will be fashion. I am in love with the way fashion speaks- through clothes, music, art, pretty much anything you can think of! Hey guys I'm Elika! A bit about myself, I was born in the bay area and moved to the east cost for a couple years then moved back at the age of 8. At the age of 11 I moved to Davis, and have been here since. Throughout the years I have travelled to the Middle East and Europe, where I was exposed to different cultures and styles, and have been inspired to major in textiles. Another influence was when I was 5 and I began helping my mom design and sew my Halloween costumes. From there sketching became one of my main hobbies along with listening to music, hanging out with friends, reading and cooking. I'm super excited about being part of the Textiles Blog this quarter! I remember being in elementary school and drawing up different outfits in my sketchbook, labeling all the specific details of my creation and everything. I came up with my own clothing line, just the ambitious dream of a young kid. I never knew it would end up being the field I'd grow up to pursue over everything else. Something that really influenced that decision was the various mission trips I've been on all over the world. When I saw the need in these countries I became driven to help through one of the things I'm most passionate about: fashion. My dream is that one day I will be able to either start or work for a non-profit that uses the remarkable world of textiles to give aid to third world countries.

Teen Vogue was my gateway magazine, and my introduction to fashion. Before I started subscribing to the magazine, I had no particular interest in fashion at all. But after looking at the glossy pages full of style, trends, makeup, and Kate Moss, I realized that I wanted to work in the fashion industry. As my clothing motives shifted from practicality to being more fashionable, my parents stopped funding my fashion excursions. While they wouldn’t buy me any more clothes, they would buy me fabric- so I learned how to sew. Today I still sew a lot of my own clothes, and I currently work in the Costume Shop at the UC Davis Theater Department.

Hey there, my name is Nicole, and I am so excited to share my thoughts about fashion with you! When the other kids in school were busy playing sports, making music, creating science fair projects, or competing in speech and debate, I always knew I didn’t belong in any of those activities because fashion was my thing. Well here's your chance apply here to become a volunteer for Mercedes-Benz Fashion week and check out the latest fall trends and new collections the fabulous designers have to offer! The roles of the volunteers will include: preparing for the runway, designer guest ushers, backstage assistance and set up, assemble gift bags/ press kits, help maintain main event information desk, assist in the volunteer center, and various other tasks. THE ONLY COLOR I CAN SEE

When winter comes along I tend to start repping my basics a lot more. Which for me means wearing a ton of black; I know, I know kind of depressing. While some might think wearing black basics don't show your "style", I tend to think the complete opposite. For me wearing black (or other neutral colors for that matter) gives you a blank slate that can be accessorized and styled in a variety of really creative and original ways. Lately, I have been wearing chunky sweaters, funky vintage boots, playful jewelery to give my little black outfits some pizazz.

P.S. I have been discovering a ton of new music while studying and seriously cannot stop listening to Miami Horror. Listen to this, I promise you wont regret it :)

COFFEE AND MCQUEEN

So today while I should have been studying for finals, I had a pretty lovely conversation about Alexander McQueen's haute couture collections with my friend at Starbucks. What I found most interesting about our conversation was my friend is not much into fashion, but is able to appreciate McQueen's rather unique aesthetic. I think our generation was blessed to have him and witness the impact he made in the fashion industry, even if it was only for a short period of time. He made art, something that few designers accomplish during their careers, and McQueen is a genius in every sense of the word. His elaborate and heavy handed point of view has forever changed the way people look at fashion.

After shoes, handbags are definitely a girl’s best friends. My mom and a handful of other women love their gigantic, super wide bags that can hold their entire lives, but I’ve always been a small bag gal. Chances are, you've probably heard the name Tiesto thrown around in conversations. Maybe you even saw him live when he came to UC Davis to perform at the Pavilion. But did you know he's starting his own clothing line? As if he wasn't big enough in the electronic music world, Tiesto is making a bigger name for himself in the fashion world by designing a line to be released in December. Tiesto's t-shirts are influenced by club culture, specifically "light, sound, and symmetry."

And no, that isn't a typo. That is a "v" in Clvb Life. The "v"'s hard line is said to represent the first time electronic music world is combining with the fashion world.

The first time I was introduced to Pamela Love, I fell in love and knew it would be one of my favorite jewelry lines. With heavy influence from tribes -specifically South and Native American motifs-mixed with a '70s "Gypsy Rockers" feel, Pamela Love's tribal pieces are a perfect addition to any outfit. I think the biggest reason why I love clothing is it's nostalgia. It's that wistful desire to return to a past part of your life. I feel that anyone who has an appreciation for fashion has an era that pulls at their nostalgic heart. For a lot of people, the 60s and the 70s are a popular era to reference. However, for me it's the 1940s. I absolutely, positively am obsessed with the 40s. Those cinched waists, fit and flares, and Hawaiian prints were such major components of that time and the things I adore. I think the 1940s rings so true to me because it was the time in which my grandmother grew up in, the time of World War II, and the time for some major changes in fashion. Never forget the past because so much of ourselves lie in it.

TOM FORD FOR H&M?

Being a H&M fanatic myself I was ecstatic to hear that the fashion house H&M is talking about collaborating with fashion designer Tom Ford. Who doesn't love H&M's guest designers, whether it be Lanvin or Versace?! (which hasn't even hit stores yet)
Regardless, Tom Ford is definitely a designer to be excited about! But don't get too excited yet, ladies and gents, this information is still in the rumor phase. But where did it come from? H&M creative adviser Margareta van den Bosch herself told Business Week that she would love to work with Tom Ford. So stay tuned to see if he'll really be the next guest designer.

I have always been a huge fan of music, basically listening to it from when I wake up to when I am closing my eyes at night. With music being such a large part of my life, I have been on the search for the perfect headphones, and I think the search has finally ended, with Urban Ears. LADY GAGA'S HOLIDAY WORKSHOP FOR BARNEYS NEW YORK

Lady Gaga has partnered up with department store giant, Barneys New York, for a holiday treat this year. Her holiday workshop will take place in Barneys' flagship store in New York, with the theme "The Twelve Days of Gaga." Each day counting down towards the grand opening of her workshop offers of an "imaginative knicknack" made specifically as a gift with purchase. Gifts revealed so far are a $15 frosted cookie with the Lady's image on it, a $25 light-up yo-yo, and a $65 Lady Gaga magnetic dress up set. Barneys also revealed that the entire fifth floor of the department store will be decorated by Lady Gaga and her team of expert stylists, featuring an entrance made into the mouth of a giant "monster." Eight mini stores will also be created, featuring lots of holiday treats including candies, cosmetics, apparel, and more.
I'm personally really curious as to how Gaga's holiday workshop is going to turn out, considering her kooky and innovative style and persona. I'm sure it will be a festive holiday treat, Gaga style!

This year's NY Chocolate Show theme, "Celebrate Broadway" made references to classic Broadway shows such as Wicked, Chicago, and The Lion King, and to more risque homages such as cabaret and can-can dancers. STUD MUFFIN

Although studs have been making a fashion statement for quite a long time, those embellished garments never really appealed to me for some reason. Maybe it’s because I never had the right amount of attitude or “cool girl” look, but whatever the case was, I’m starting to warm up to the trend now.

This look from Christeric popped up on my Google Reader and I immediately swooned over her stud on stud ensemble.

I also found some DIY ideas where the placements of the studs are in more subtle areas like your nails, collars, and bottom panels of bags, like the iconic Alexander Wang bag. These projects will definitely be on my To-Do List, what about you?

I (along with 70,000 other blogreaders) often find myself inspired by the street style blog called The Sartorialist. However, I've always come to wonder the meaning behind the blog and what exactly it was all about. While browsing through Youtube, I found my answer! Scott Schuman, the man behind The Sartorialist started photographing his infamous street-style shots armed with just his digital camera in 2005 and hasn't stopped since. His sharp eye for style has definitely made him a pioneer of fashion photography as well as in the blog world, and his ability to captivate an essential sense of "fashion-divinity" in regular people on the street truly amazes me. I love outfits that mix prints. I think it is so daring and chic to do, but so simple at the same time. While I am not a huge fan of color, I tend to buy patterned clothes in neutral colors. However, mixing in some color is never a bad thing! I think mixing prints allows you to go the distance in your outfit. Make the jewelry as big of a statement too, just keep adding to the depth and layers of the outfit. I especially love mixing prints in the winter, since winter in itself is already extravagant enough! My favorite combinations include stripes and plaids, stripes and polka dots, and fair isle and florals. Happy mixing and matching!

TAYLOR TOMASI HILL LEAVES MARIE CLAIRE

One of my favorite street stylists (and red head), Taylor Tomasi Hill, is leaving her Style and Accessories Director position at Marie Claire to become the new Artistic Director for online retailer, Moda Operandi. It is an unfortunate loss for Marie Claire but her familiarity with the magazine business will help definitely push Moda Operandi into the right direction.

Undoubtedly a great asset to Marie Claire, she is probably most known for her street fashion. Chunky jewelry, cat-eye sunglasses, bold pieces, and of course, her red hair, are all major staples in her wardrobe. She likes to mix feminine pieces with masculine edgy items and is still able to pull it off flawlessly.

Recently, the Wall Street Journal declared clothes from the 90's to be considered "vintage." Although I've always considered the 90's kind of my era (I grew up during this period!), this denouncement has left me painstakingly fashion-nostalgic; long live the days of Calvin Klein, scrunchies, over-sized grungy flannel, chunky beepers and Doc-Martens. I relish in the thought of 90's fashion making a comeback, yet can't help but agonize over how fast time has gone by and the trends that have gone by with it. Lately I have noticed that I have become increasingly more interested in big, bold, statement jewelry. I used to be pretty minimal when it came to accessorizing. I am currently obsessed with all things sheer- chiffon, silk, or lace in shirts, skirts and dresses; I find them all the perfect combination of light and femine! Look familiar? You may recognize this from Lady Gaga's tattoo-abundant "Born This Way" music video. Rick "Zombie Boy" Genest, the man on the right, is unmistakable. His whole body is covered to represent a corpse. And yes, his tattoos are real!

So many things about fall just make me happy! The anticipation of the holiday season, being with the ones you love, spending hours in a coffee shop, and of course the fashion. Fall is bar none my favorite season to dress for, and now that Davis is beginning to cool down I am so excited to break out my fall wardrobe. I tend to buy the majority of my winter clothes over the summer when everything is on sale, which is great for my wallet, but drives me crazy as I have to sit and wait to wear my new cozy purchases. Currently I am obsessed with cream cable knit sweaters, chunky gold jewelry, cigarette jeans, lace up boots, and parkas. Fall clothes always make me smile and remind me of all the good things fall has to offer.

DIY ELBOW PATCHES

I have been admiring sweater and blazers with elbow patches for the longest time but couldn't bring myself to shell out the extra cash, especially when I have so many similar ones (sans patches.) It is the perfect addition to any basic blazer or over sized sweater. Elbow patches give your wardrobe a more vintage and cozy look, perfect for fall!
